Do I need Microsoft Access installed on my computer to use an Access Database?

Download Access Runtime FAQ

The simple answer is YES! Microsoft Access Database is required to run an Access database. The good news is that if you don’t already have Microsoft Access Database installed on your computer Microsoft provide a FREE runtime version of Microsoft Access Database which you can download and install.  However the news is not so good if you own a Macintosh computer running a Mac OS.  Microsoft Access Database does not run within the native Mac operating system.

The free Runtime version of Access database allows you to run any Access database created in the same or an earlier full version of Microsoft Access.  Access runtime environment has been has been available since Access 97, with a version released with every new release of Microsoft Access Database.

Whilst most access database runs fine in the Runtime environment, you will not have access to, or be able to change, the design of the database.  Also in the Access Database Runtime environment you will not have access to the native Access Toolbars or Access Ribbon that are available in the full version of Access Database, which should not present any problem in a well-designed database where the required tools and option will likely be built in to the relevant user forms and reports, or where the developer has provided a customised set of toolbars or Access ribbon.

A word of caution. NEVER install Microsoft Access Database Runtime on a computer which already has any version full version of Microsoft Access Database installed on it.  Whilst Microsoft do not specifically advise against it, experience tells us some serious conflicts can arise.
